Retainer

Long-term success: retainers or retention splints secure the results of orthodontic treatment

A fixed retainer is an important part of orthodontic treatment. After fixed or removable braces have successfully helped to correct misaligned teeth, the retainer plays a decisive role in maintaining the results achieved in the long term.
The wire is attached behind the front teeth in the upper and/or lower jaw using plastic. The small wire prevents the teeth from shifting back to their original position.

In addition to the fixed retainer, there are also removable transparent splints or braces that hold the teeth and dental arches in their shape after treatment.

Advantages of a retainer

Prevention of relapse: Wearing retainers prevents the teeth from shifting again, which means that additional treatments can be avoided.

Simple care: This only requires regular cleaning and, if necessary, check-ups with the orthodontist and/or dentist.

Almost invisible: As retainers are attached to the inside of the teeth with transparent plastic, they are hardly noticeable.

Not susceptible: As the retainer consists of only a few components, it is rare for anything to break. If something does break on your retainer, first find out exactly what happened and how it happened. The two most common problems that occur with a retainer are loosening of the wire or a broken retainer.

Costs

Statutory health insurance companies generally only accept removable retention plates. Only in special cases will the health insurance company reimburse the costs of a retainer. With private health insurance companies, it depends on the tariff whether the costs are reimbursed in full or only partially. Normally, the results of orthodontic treatment are checked for a year after active treatment to ensure that they are stable.

Treatment

If you decide in favour of a retainer, your orthodontist will next carry out a detailed analysis. Here, dental impressions are taken using the intraoral scanner and the retainer is customised.

After the fixed braces have been removed, your teeth are cleaned and polished. This means that the retainer can be inserted directly. This reduces the risk of the teeth moving spontaneously. For this reason, retainers are used after braces. The retainer wire is attached to the back of the front teeth of the lower and / or upper jaw.

A fixed retainer usually remains in the mouth for several years; nowadays it is recommended to leave the fixed retainer in place permanently, this is referred to as ‘life-long retention’, as the teeth can still shift at any age, regardless of previous orthodontic treatment. The jaws become narrower and shorter with increasing age. The retainer may need to be replaced after 10, 15 or 20 years. As an alternative to the fixed retainer, a removable retention appliance in the form of a transparent splint or removable braces can be worn at night. If removal of the fixed retainer is desired at some point, please discuss this step with us in order to prevent possible complications and discuss alternatives.
