Sports mouthguard (sports splint)

Active preservation: the aim of a sports mouthguard is to maintain dental health

Whether in the boxing ring, hockey or rugby – sports mouthguards are indispensable in many sports. It not only protects against immediate injuries in the mouth area, but can also prevent more serious injuries such as concussions. A perfect fit is essential for this.
Even if you have fixed braces, for example, it is possible to wear a customised mouthguard.

Advantages

Protection from injuries: The primary purpose of a sports mouthguard is to protect teeth, lips, tongue and jaw from injury. In the event of knocks or blows to the mouth area, the mouthguard can absorb the impact and thus prevent broken teeth or other injuries.

Concussion prevention: A good mouthguard can even help reduce the risk of concussion by cushioning the impact to the lower jaw, reducing the transmission of shock waves to the brain.
A sports mouthguard should fit perfectly.

Material and quality: A high-quality mouthguard is made of robust but flexible material. It should be neither too hard nor too soft.

Breathability: Our models have air channels that make breathing easier, which is particularly beneficial during intensive sports.

Appearance: For those who also value appearance, there is a wide range of designs and colours.

Costs

Unfortunately, statutory health insurance companies do not cover the costs. You must therefore bear 100% of these costs yourself. The exact price depends on the materials and colours used.

Treatment

At the beginning, a 3D scan of your teeth is taken. This digital impression allows the splints to be produced with a precise fit. After we have discussed your wishes, for example regarding the colour, the splints are individually manufactured from robust and thin plastic.

Utilisation and care

The lifespan of a sports mouthguard depends on various factors such as the frequency of use or care and whether the wearer is still growing.
Children and adolescents’ jaws and teeth are constantly changing as they grow. This means that a sports mouthguard may no longer fit perfectly, even if the material itself is still in good condition. In such cases, the mouthguard should be adjusted or replaced. In adults, a sports mouthguard should be checked at least once a year. Active athletes or athletes with braces may need to have their teeth checked and replaced more frequently.

It is important to clean it after each use, allow it to dry and store it in a ventilated container or leave it open at home without a container. This prevents the accumulation of bacteria and other microorganisms that can produce an unpleasant odour.
If a mouthguard has tears, holes or other visible damage, it should be replaced, even if it is not very old. Such damage can impair the protective effect.
